TUNE IN for a Special Night Celebrating The Music of Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia

Sweetwater Music Hall

Two-time Emmy Award winning bassist, composer, producer and son of legendary Bay Area keyboardist, Merl Saunders, Tony Saunders’ life has been infused with one musical adventure after another. As an arranger, producer, composer and performer, Saunders has conquered the worlds of jazz, gospel, R&B, pop, rock and world music. He earned the first of his two Emmys at age 14 for collaborating with his dad on the PBS documentary Soul Is and by 17 was playing with Merl and Jerry Garcia on their collaborative projects. The second was earned for his contribution on the TV show, Digital Journey, on the episode, “China: Their New Digital Economy.” Though he took one of his first musical lessons on piano from Herbie Hancock, the bass he received from John Fogerty’s brother Tom – and watching recording sessions with famed bassists Anthony Davis and Lee Miles – sparked a lifelong passion for that instrument that now, 50 years later, has led to his emergence as a major independent force in contemporary jazz.

KGGV Live Stream Event - The True Loves with Fourth Position

8pm Thursday, March 16, 2023

Sweetwater Music Hall

Listening to the abundant sounds of the Seattle-based funk & soul group, True Loves, is like walking down a favorite neighborhood street, slapping five with friends, checking up with clerks in their stores, admiring your dark sun-glassed face in their windows, ducking under flowerpots and smelling the familiar smells of your most cherished locale. The band is its own block party.

What began in 2014 as a jam session between three of the city’s best – pocket-perfect drummer David McGraw, intoxicating bassist Bryant Moore, and otherworldly guitarist Jimmy James – has since blossomed into a global force that now features percussionist Iván Galvez and four horn players: trombonists Jason Cressey and Greg Kramer, and saxophonists Gordon Brown and Skerik. Together, the group’s live performances have garnered them much acclaim and millions of streams on YouTube.

In 2017, True Loves recorded their debut instrumental LP, Famous Last Words, which received worldwide adoration and earned them spots at coveted festivals. In 2021, the group released their sophomore album, Sunday Afternoon

KGGV Live Stream Event - Pink Talking Fish

Saturday, March 04, 2023

Show: 9pm

Sweetwater Music Hall

Pink Talking Fish is a Hybrid Tribute Fusion Act that takes the music from three of the world’s most beloved bands and creates a special treat for fans of the music.

Pink Floyd, Talking Heads and Phish are all more than just bands… they are Phenomenons.  Their creations have artistically inspired people and their mindblowing live performances have brought people together to form a special sense of community around the love for their favorite band.

Although the music from each act is different, Pink Talking Fish has discovered that fusing the material together creates an amazing story.  The epic emotion of Pink Floyd…. The funky, danceable layerings of Talking Heads…. The multitude of styles, unique compositional structures and pure fun of Phish…. to merge these three into one gives music lovers a special experience.

Pink Talking Fish features Eric Gould on bass, Richard James on keyboards, Zack Burwick on drums and Cal Kehoe on guitar.  This is a band created by musicians who love the music of these acts.  It’s purpose is to heighten people’s passion for this music by creating something fresh and exciting for fans.

Discovering connections is part of the fun:  Pink Floyd’s “On The Run” seamlessly fitting in the middle of the composition of Phish’s “You Enjoy Myself”.  Perfectly placing Phish’s “Sand” into the groove of Talking Head’s “Slippery People”.  Segued collections from all three acts such as Run Like Hell > Making Flippy Floppy > Piper > Run Like Hell or Mike’s Song > Have A Cigar > Once In A Lifetime > Weekapaug Groove.  These ideas are the spirit behind Pink Talking Fish.

The story is ever evolving.  The experience is always exciting.  Come join Pink Talking Fish for the ultimate fusion tribute and celebrate the love of this music in unique fashion.

Tune Into KGGV The Gilmour Project Explores Dark Side Of The Moon

Sweewater Music Hall

Thursday, February 23, 2023

There are Pink Floyd tribute bands … and then there is The Gilmour Project. The 5-piece, All-Star ensemble, quickly gained a reputation for flipping the ‘Tribute Band’ script on its head, with exploratory performances of iconic and deep cut Pink Floyd classics, David Gilmour-centric and solo compositions, and pulling other surprise classic rock masterpieces out of their hats. Their version of (David Gilmour ‘discovery’) Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ appeared nightly in their sets, weeks ahead of its ‘Stranger Things’ buoyed resurgence to the top of the charts and worldwide press … making the band appear spookily prescient. Not satisfied with laurel resting, they immediately began adding geographic / historically prerogative selections … Grateful Dead’s ‘Dark Star’ in San Francisco … Patti Smith’s (Van Morrison’s actually) ‘Gloria’ in Detroit … The Band’s ‘The Weight’ in Ontario … The Allman Bros. ‘Jessica’ in Atlanta … Tom Petty’s ‘Breakdown’ in Florida … Santana’s (Peter Green composition) ‘Black Magic Woman’ in Mexico City.

Their original multimedia, ‘Floydian’ spectacle, eschewed poaching Floyd/Gilmour production assets and imagery – relying instead on visuals created by acclaimed (Blondie and Todd Rundgren) LD Hans Shoop and quadraphonic sound design and special audio FX by The Duke of New York (producer of Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland – The Remixes’). Each show was live streamed, modernizing a page from Grateful Dead’s nihilist marketing playbook, and making the performances available for free around the world for those unable to attend due to Covid concerns, or just unable to attend by being on the other side of the planet.

The Gilmour Project is
⦁    Jeff Pevar (lead guitar with CSN, David Crosby/CPR, Joe Cocker, Ray Charles, Bette Midler, Blue Floyd, Phil Lesh & Friends, Ricki Lee Jones, Marc Cohn),
⦁    Kasim Sulton (bass & vocals with Todd Rundgren’s Utopia, Meatloaf, Blue Oyster Cult, Hall & Oates, Cheap Trick & Joan Jett),
⦁    Prairie Prince (co-founder of The Tubes, original drummer with Journey, drums with Todd Rundgren, Blue Floyd, Jefferson Starship, Phil Lesh & Friends, XTC, George Harrison, Chris Isaak, Dick Dale),
⦁    Mark Karan (guitar & vocals with Bob Weir, RatDog, The Other Ones, The Airplane Family, Live Dead ’69, Tom Constanten
⦁    Scott Guberman keyboard & vocals with Phil Lesh & Friends, Live Dead ’69, Keystone Revisited, Englishtown Project

KGGV Exclusive - STONE FOXES with The Coffis Brothers - Live From Sweetwater Music Hall

8pm - Sunday, February 19, 2023

After 2 years, the San Francisco rock and roll band is back on the road, bringing their fans a first listen to some of the songs from their brand new album On The Other Side. Their recordings have managed to capture and even elevate the unadulterated joy of seeing them live. Even so, one thing remains eternally true of the Stone Foxes; if you die without seeing them live, it will have been a wasted life.

Born out of both global and personal hardships, On The Other Side is an album of the heart. As the world was forced to look inward, so were the Foxes. Quite literally for Shannon, who underwent a painful open heart surgery (his second open heart surgery and fourteenth heart surgery in total). But, out of this pain came a sweeping soundscape that feels like both new territory and a return to roots.

The production of this album was a journey in itself: written by Shannon and Spence, rehearsed in their parents’ basement, recorded in studios and living rooms throughout The Bay, and mastered in Nashville. But through heartaches, hardships and harbingers of doom, the connecting force has always been love; brotherly love, romantic love and, of course, the unbridled love of rock music. They exude this love during their unmissable live shows and when Shannon takes the band out on tour, the world is better for it.

The Coffis Brothers

With their newest record, Turn My Radio Up, The Coffis Brothers salute the glory days of the FM dial while planting their flag firmly in the present. Produced by Bay Area legend (and longtime Mother Hips frontman) Tim Bluhm, the album makes equal room for heartland rock & roll anthems, front-porch folk songs, and campfire-worthy Americana ballads.

Brothers Jamie and Kellen Coffis were raised in the Santa Cruz Mountains of northern California, an area whose woodsy imagery left a permanent mark on their sound. Their mother was a children's musician who often recruited the boys to join her onstage, instilling in them an appreciation for energetic, catchy songs that focused on melody, mood, and message. "We learned how to sing three-part harmonies with Mom at a young age," remembers Jamie, who later grew into an accomplished keyboardist as his brother sharpened his chops on guitar. When the two began writing songs together in 2007, they found that their shared upbringing — including the music they'd heard on the radio airwaves as kids — had left a lasting mark on their artistic sensibilities. "It's all-American music," says Kellen, who shares frontman duties with Jamie. "There's rock, blues, acoustic folk, and country in there. As music fans, we go all the way back to the beginning — to pioneers like Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers — but we also look to artists like the Eagles and Tom Petty for influence. That's our playbook."

Night 2 - Airplane Family - Celebrates the iconic Album - Blows against the Empire

THE AIRPLANE FAMILY reunites original & legacy members of Jefferson Starship, Grateful Dead, Hot Tuna, Bob Weir’s RatDog, David Crosby Band, New Riders & JGB to perform the 50th Anniversary of Paul Kantner’s Jefferson Starship masterpiece of Science Fiction & Rock & Roll … “Blows Against the Empire” – the first Rock Music album nominated for literary Science Fiction’s prestigious Hugo Award. Originally planned for Spring 2020, worldwide passionate fans of this music and recording have had their wishes granted as we all look forward, following a year and a half of waiting.

“Blows Against the Empire” marked the debut of the Jefferson Starship moniker, though not of the band itself, since it predates the actual formation of the Jefferson Starship band by four years. The album was recorded at Pacific High Recording Studios and Wally Heider Recording Studios in San Francisco. The result derives from a period of cross-collaboration during late 1969 through 1971 by a collection of musicians from various San Francisco bands including Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young recording at the same time in the city. For “Blows Against the Empire,” Paul Kantner enlisted Grace Slick, Peter Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Joey Covington, David Crosby, Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Graham Nash & others. He described Jefferson Starship as a ‘loose coalition of musicians that would get together from time to time’ – a protocol upon which THE AIRPLANE FAMILY was organized.

THE AIRPLANE FAMILY will perform the 50th Anniversary of “Blows” in its entirety for the first time ever, anywhere, plus ‘The Worst of Jefferson Airplane’ …their greatest hits compilation. Peter Kaukonen, original member of both Jefferson Starship & Hot Tuna, who also joined Jefferson Airplane for their 1989 tour with his brother Jorma, brings his unique optic as an integral part of the original recording for ‘Blows Against the Empire.’ Also appearing are long time Paul Kantner (from KBC through 2016 Jefferson Starship) lead guitarist Slick Aguilar (who also played with Crosby in the 1980s), guitarist/vocalist Mike Falzarano (Hot Tuna & New Riders), drummer Pete Lavazzoli who currently performs with Oteil Burbidge and with JGB for 12 years, and acclaimed female vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Clare Maloney will add the Grace Slick vocals.
